Long Bio – 450 words

Monique Buzzarté, trombonist/composer, is an avid proponent of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering many new works for trombone alone, with electronics, and in chamber ensembles in addition to her own compositions of solo, chamber, and electronic works for a variety of forces. Selected by Meet the Composer as a “Soloist Champion” in recognition of her long history of commissioning and premiering new works, Ms. Buzzarté was also awarded a MAP Fund grant for a collaboration with Frances White for a composition exploring the relationships between the trombone and the shakuhachi, two ancient micro-tonal wind instruments that both transcend the notion of fixed temperament. Since 1983 her New Music from Women – Trombone project has supported the expansion of the trombone repertoire with over twenty compositions in various genres; including from composers such as Pauline Oliveros, Alice Shields, Sorrel Hays, and Anne LeBaron.

Ms. Buzzarté’s most recent recordings include three collaborations with If, Bwana  E (and sometimes why) (Pogus 21062-2), 16 LIVE/CICADA #3 (Bastet’s Kitten BK001), and Assemble. Age! (Mutable Music 17540-2) along with two duo collaborations Fluctuations (Deep Listening 38) with Ellen Fullman, hailed by the Wire magazine as one of their Top 50 Records of 2008, and Holding Patterns (Deep Listening 30) with Kristin Norderval, cited by Splendid Magazine as “a collaboration as elegant as it is boundary-pushing”. Other recordings include Ensemble Π’s Keep Going: Music of Elias Tanenbaum (Ravello Records RAEL 7807), Noah Creshevsky’s To Know and Not to Know (Tzadik 8036), Dreaming Wide Awake with the New Circle Five (Deep Listening 20) and John Cage’s Five3 with the Arditti Quartet (Mode 75: John CAGE: Vol. 19 – The Number Pieces 2). 

As a composer, Ms. Buzzarté is primarily interested in exploring expansive musical situations, especially those which attempt to alter inner and outer perceptions of time and space. Recent commissions include Subtle Winds for the Downtown Ensemble’s Flexible Orchestra (New York, NY and Hudson, NY), Here Right Now for the Telematic Circle (Troy, NY, Stanford, CA, and San Diego, CA), and Zanana’s Sub/veillance for the Electric Eyes: New Music and Media Festival (Minneapolis, MN). She was selected for a 2007 Harvestworks Artist in Residence for a new surround sound composition, and received a 2006 Jack Straw Productions Artist Support grant for a recording of her works. Her evening-length dance score with Pauline Oliveros for Morgan Thorson and Company was recently premiered in Minneapolis, MN. She has developed an unique interactive performance interface for the trombone, supported in part through artist residencies in 2003 at Create@iEAR (Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) Studios and in 2002 at Harvestworks.

An author and educator as well as a performer/composer, Ms. Buzzarté’s advocacy work for women in music included coordinating efforts which led to the admission of women members into the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997. She co-edited the Anthology of Essays on Deep Listening (Deep Listening Publications, 2012) and has researched and compiled repertoire listings of the brass compositions of women composers which have been published in The Musical Woman: An International Perspective, Vol. III(Greenwood Press, 1991). A former Vice President of the International Alliance for Women in Music, she was a contributing author to Women and Music in America Since 1900: An Encyclopedia (Greenwood Press, 2002) and is the past co-chair of GRIME (Gender Research in Music Education) International.
